Astronaut & Ape – 2001: A Space Odyssey
A dazzling diorama that captures the essence of Kubrick’s classic Sci-fi film.
The late sculptor, Jim Fawkes, delivers a precision-crisp astronaut, an animated ape, and a handsome handling of the surrounding landscape: moon dust to bone-littered desert.
Lunar’s 2001 model was primarily cast in off-white solid: both figures, base, and skull, which are all used here. However, their kit included sheets of pre-cut styrene to fabricate the monolith, which never looked right.
Here, that flimsy styrene monolith has been replaced by a slab of Plexiglas for solid rigidity and proper appearance. It measures 12” tall x 6” wide x ½” thick: the same size as Lunar’s original. There’s also an optional movie nameplate that was never included with Lunar’s kit.
The entire model is constructed to last a lifetime and meticulously finished just as you see it here. Both figures are pegged to the base at their feet, but not glued in place, allowing for safer shipping. The monolith is unglued as well, and the animal skull and nameplate are unattached for desired placement.
Plug it together, and the scene measures 12 ½” tall x 12 ½” wide x 7 ½” deep.
No doubt, one of Lunar Models’ finest resin kit releases, built better than ever.
